Tindell's Horse & Mule School (Humans, Too!) |
"THE ROUND PEN"Use Round Pen techniques to build a True Connection between you and your horse or mule Round Penning makes use of the natural "hard-wiring" of the equine mind to look for a leader, and to accept the leadership of the one who can move his/her feet. All handling skills - whether from the ground or in the saddle, begin in the round pen. Directing movement, pace, gaits, turns, stops, flexing, etc., can all be started and developed in the round pen, with the horse at liberty (no halter).

Learn to communicate effectively with your horse, using only halter and lead rope. Build a solid foundation for safe and pleasurable riding and driving.
Problems on the halter and lead rope predict problems under saddle or in harness. Problems in the saddle reflect problems you see every day while caring for your horse on the ground.
If you learn to communicate effectively with your horse or mule from the lead rope, you'll know what to do in the saddle, even when unexpected things come your way.
Shying, pushiness, running off, "barn sour" resistance, panicking - all these and other common problems can be safely and effectively worked out through halter work on the ground.

The video focuses on these essential Ground Skills:
Softening at the poll/Lowering the head
Back Up from 4 Positions
Ground Driving | |
Driving in a Circle | |
Yielding the Hindquarters
Shoulder Yield | |
Leading | |
Standing Still |
Just wanted to say if anyone is looking for a good starting place with their horses, this video was a great investment! Mike Kerson did the video work and it is excellent - the editing is smooth and logical and the sound is always clear and easy to hear. Jerry clearly presents the exercises and explains them in a way that even novices can understand. It was clear to me how each exercise would lead directly into good riding experiences. Mike (Mike Dibble, the video recipient) was quickly able to teach Cuervo all the exercises. They were doing so well I suggested he try them from Cuervo's back. Prior to this, Cuervo had just been mounted and led around for short walks. Mike mounted up, and to our great pride, Cuervo walked out with a light leg cue and cluck, willingly turned both directions, stopped when asked and even backed with just very light rein cues...and, he has never worn a bit... - Carmen Deyo, Black Horse Designs |

By the time Rachel the Gray Mule was rescued from abuse and neglect, she had developed many bad behaviors exhibited by equines:
She was hard to catch.
She bolted through gates.
She broke away from her handler.
She was hard to bridle.
She would not allow her feet to be handled.
She would rear back when tied.
She would not stand still for saddling.
She would not stand still for a rider to mount.
Once mounted, she would bolt , run, and buck her rider off.
In short, Rachel was one very troubled mule.
Rachel's rescuer brought her to Jerry Tindell as a last-ditch effort to rehabilitate her.
This video contains 3 hours of REAL TIME footage of Jerry Tindell's first morning working with Rachel.
What a difference a half-day can make!
For people who are serious about learning Approach and Release techniques, this is your primer! Everything is in this training video: approach & release, recognizing the try, catching, leading, round pen, ground work, getting ready to ride, "first" ride, feet handling, and safe tying.
Although Rachel's needs and behaviors present a somewhat extreme case, the training techniques work the same for all equines: domestic horses, mustangs, and mules.
